'Circles in the sand'615 viewsI was trying to think of an idea for a sculpture for an exhibition which was called "Point to point" for some reason the old join the dots (or dot to dot) came to mind. I did a row of dots and then thought it resembled Neptune's necklace - a seaweed I see on the beach sometimes... Then the patterns of wind and water came to mind - so this piece just evolved.

The Answer610 viewsI was thinking about grass blowing around in the wind when I was carving this one and then half way through I under went a slight change of mind... deciding that it would be too busy with lots of swaying lines all over it. So I went for a smooth contrast. So this one I feel is very tactile. You can run you fingers along the wavy lines and then enjoy the cool smoothness of the central core.

In the Groove614 viewsA neighbour of mine saw one of my other wacky pieces and said 'I bet you can't carve balls suspended within the stone.' I took that as a challenge and here it is! - balls caught in the groove... A really fun, funky piece which always makes me smile.

Wavy fern leaf641 viewsAs a teenager I used to be taken on bush walks by my parents – both of whom were very knowledgeable about plants and trees. They used to argue amongst themselves about specific botanic names and tell me the most amazing things about the plants we passed by. “Wavy fern” (not its biological name – sorry Mum and Dad) is not a small fern but a large glossy one – which I love the undulating shapes.Oct 30, 2007

Don't Know605 viewsI was doodling when I made this. I began thinking about fish hooks, then dolphins and whales swimming in the ocean, and then vertibrae??? So I came up with something very unusual but soft and flowing with deep contrasting shadows.

Tui birdbath1305 viewsWhen a friend saw my tui sundial she wanted a birdbath in a similar design... so I made her one. Initially it had a flax leaf design on the base like it has photographed here, but after further consideration I decided it looked better without a base, but with just the column and bowl. Now Tuis, along with other birds, drink and bathe in it daily in Vicky's garden.

fern bowl537 viewsA few months ago I was asked to make a birdbath. I was given dimensions for the bowl, but after I started rounding out the outside I was emailed to say they had given me the wrong dimensions. For a long time the round top sat un-formed and alone, then one day I thought of this... based on fern leaves and fronds.
Stands 925mm high. Bowl 400mm across
